'Swift Girls'

silk factory

By Anton Shelton

Quite a few of the mother's family originally came from Great Yarmouth. In the 1851 census two are recorded as being employed as 'swift girls in a silk factory'.

Does anybody have any idea what this job is?

Me too!  My Great Great grandmother (14) and her elder sister are both listed like that in the 1851 Yarmouth census.
