The advent of refrigeration meant that the fish could be stored for longer periods of time.
Unfortunately, though, this didn't stop the 'death' of the industry in Yarmouth, where there was quite a distance between the Fishwharf and the Train Stations.
The industry continued for a while longer in Lowestoft, mainly because the Train Station was close to the Quayside, but eventually it died off there as well.
