Memories of Great Yarmouth
Me with Eric (the tall one) and his friend Mike Cousins taking a stroll along the front
Eric had gone back for demob from Army. Feeling sad that day.

As promised, a couple of pics from 1954 walking along the front and Regent Road. Note the suit and tie and hat and gloves. We would never go to the beach in Oz dressed like that. We really dressed 'proper' in those days.
As the summer season had not started yet, I went to find a job. I saw an ad on the Deli stall in the market place for an assistant, so asked about it. I was asked how much I wanted per week. (A surprise as I had been earning two pounds and five shillings at the YMCA in Leeds. So I said, 'three pounds will do' - I got the job. It was selling chickens, bacon, ham other goods. The chap asked if I had ever 'dressed a chicken'. I had no idea what he was talking about but said yes anyway. He gave me a bucket and a dead chicken and told me to 'dress' it. I then realised that he meant take the guts out. So for the first, and not the last time in my life, I prepared a chicken for sale. I enjoyed this job, calling out to the shoppers how good the stuff was on the stall. I also had conversations with the people who sold the fruit and veg across the way.
Eric introduced me to cockles, mussels and whelks and mushy peas and lovely chips in the market place. When we went back in 1984, that was the first place we visited. It was a bit different, but still enjoyable.
Next time I will post some older photos taken in Great Yarmouth.
