Mitchell Brother´s Tattooing

Tattooing
By Lee Mitchell

My name is Lee Mitchell and I have started this page to find out if anybody has any information on my Grandfather James Mitchell or my Great uncle. These´s two were pretty famous in their time for their tattooing in Great Yarmouth in I´m guessing the 40´s, 50´s and maybe the 60´s.

My Grandfather passed away over a decade ago and my Greatuncle in the recent years, I have fond memories of my Grandfather but none of my Greatuncle, however I can spot their work a mile off.

I would love for peope who have pictures or any information to add to my page. I´ve spoken to people who have told me they got famous for tattooing our soldiers before they went to fight in WW2 and that they were even known in Australia...?

All I know of the work they done is that they had their shop under the Brittania Pier, they never finished a line with a spike ( it was always a dott ) and my Grandfather was also known for his thick glasses.

Everytime I went to a pub, a resturant or even starting a new job, I always meet someone new who had not only just one but a few or more tattoo´s from my Grandfather.

I feel very proud when I see another tattoo on someone and I tell them it was my Grandfather who done that. So if anyone does have any information please write or even better add picture´s to my page.

Thankyou all so much.

Lee Mitchell

HI LEE I BELIEVE WE ARE DISTANTLY RELATED I AM CURRENTLY RESEARCHING MY FAMILY TREE AND MY GRANDFATHER WAS A WILLIAM WILLIAMS AND HIS FATHER WAS A LUKE WILLIAMS WHO WAS MARRIED TO A JEANETTE MITCHELL. THEY RESIDED AT 9 ROW 78 IN 1890 AND MY GRANDFATHER WILLIAM USED TO WORK FOR THE MICHELLS WHEN I BELIEVE THEY WERE POSSIBLY TATTOING IN ONE OF THE YARMOUTH ROWS. AND BY A BIT OF A COINCIDENCE I TO HAD A TATTOO OF A SWALLOW IN THE 1970'S NOT REALISING IT TO BE FROM A DISTANT RELATIVE. I WILL BE IN TOUCH WITH ANY MORE INFORMATION I REMEMBER OR FIND. HI LEE WE MAY BE DISTANT RELATIVES. MY GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS A LUKE WILLIAMS WHO MARRIED A JEANETTE MITCHELL. THEY RESIDED AT NO 9 ROW 78 IN 1890 WITH SEVERAL CHILDREN AND ONE OF THE CHILDREN WAS A WILLIAM WILLIAMS ( MY FATHERS FATHER ) AND HE WOULD SIT IN A TATTOIST SHOP WHICH I BELIEVE WAS IN ONE OF THE ROWS. AS SOMETIMES DRUNKEN SAILORS ECT MAY COME IN FOR A TATTOO AND MAY NOT WANT TO PAY FOR IT MY GRANDFATHER WOULD EXTRACT THE MONEY FOR THE WORK WITH SOME PERSUATION AS HE WAS OCCASIONALY IN THE CORN EXCHANGE OR FAIR GROUNDS BOXING TRYING TO EARN SOME EXTRA MONEY TO FEED QUITE A LARGE FAMILY. BY COINCIDENCE I HAD A TATTOO ON GREAT YARMOUTH PIER IN AROUND 1971-2 NOT REALISING AT THE TIME OF FAMILY CONNECTION. I WILL BE IN TOUCH WITH ANY MORE INFO FOR YOUR RESEARCH. GOOD LUCK NIGEL
