Postcard showing the 1905 flood

A letter home from one of the survivors

By John Layton

This is a relatively rare postcard showing flood damage in 1905.  The writing on the back reads:

"Thanks for the letter, done my share of the garments.  Tea has been put off as Mr Flaxman is ill.

Very high tide the other day, enough water up Soto' (Southtown) Road to float a boat, up to the windows in Waterpark Terrace.  Lots of people couldn't get out of their houses.

Think this view is near the Fishwharf."

This is an example of photographs of the day being made into postcards to 'commemorate' the occasion.
