Postcards showing the seafront at night (NOT!)
Old tricks of the trade
By John Layton
Before the advent of the modern colour photograph, some postcard manufacturers resorted to other means to show Yarmouth by night.
The first postcard here is obviously the 'original', daytime photograph, from which the second has been produced. (There are two people walking in exactly the same spot on each, for instance). The way they did this, I believe was to black out the sky and add spots of colour for the light sources.
The third postcard shows a slightly better example of this, and the fourth is a modern colour postcard showing a similar scene.
