Postcards of the Wellington Pier and Winter Gardens

The changing face of the pier in the 20th Century

The Wellington Pier has undergone less changes than its sister pier, the Britannia, but it still has changed somewhat.

It was bought by the comedian Jim Davidson in the 1990s to be refurbished, but has now become derelict, the iron skeleton being all that remains of its once proud pavilion.  (The tops of the turrets of the pavilion can be found in an enclosed area nearby)

The first postcard is undated, but the view is assumed to be c1900.  If anyone can help us date it more accurately, please get in touch.

The second postcard is dated 1935.

Also included here is a photograph of the interior of the Winter Gardens Building, which was purchased from Torquay and brought to Yarmouth as an attraction.  It later became a German Biergarten, then an adventure playground for children.
