This is Charles Meadows of Great Yarmouth, who worked for the Great Yarmouth telephone exchange in the days of dialling 100 and speaking to the operator, to be asked "which service do you require?"

Charles worked at the telephone exchange for 27 years from 1947 to 1974 doing the night shift 6pm to 8am, anybody else remember those times?
The telephone exchange was above the old Gt Yarmouth Post Office on the corner of Regent Street and the Quay.
Can anybody remember the line of red telephone boxes outside the building?
Asks Vanessa Watson of Martham who provided me with this photograph of her Dad working on the exchange

Both my grandparents worked at the Exchange. My nanny, Monica Knights was there 1964-1990 and my grandad, Gordon Knights in about the late 70's (perhaps early 80s). I'll see if I can dig out some photographs of them.

I worked at Yarmouth Telephone Exchange in the '60s. I moved from Gorleston Exchange when it was closed down as it was a manual exchange. I would like to hear from anyone who remembers me. I think it was a Miss White who was supervisor and I know Nora Johnson was deputy. Other people I remember were Pam Knights, Carole Hitchin, and Sandra Atherton. There were many more whose surnames I cannot remember.
