Photographs of some of the guesthouses owned by the Scott and Bassett families

Mrs Tuttles Grandparents the Scott's moved to Great Yarmouth in the 1930's in order to purchase and run a guesthouse in the town.

As their business grew they brought more properties until most of the family members including Mrs Tuttle's parents the Bassett's were running guesthouses in the town.

The family also set up the Great Yarmouth guesthouse association.

My son has become interested in the family history and knew that my Uncle Robert was in the hotel business in Yarmouth. He found the information you have on the Scott /Bassett family and recognised me in the l950's photo supplied by Valerie . I think the photo is probably l952 when Valerie was 3 and I was 25!!

In addition to the Scott and Bassett families there was also the Daxter, Smith, McNamara, White and Blackwell families who were also in the catering, restaurant & hotel business in Yarmouth for many years.

The clan desended from Harry Smith b 1861 (Ivybridge Devon)and Harriett Ada Blatchford b 1867 (Maidstone Kent). The SMITH children became: Scott via Alice Smith (Roberts wife); Bassett via Hilda daughter of Robert Scott; Daxter via Annie Smith; McNamara via Nellie Smith; White via McNamara's daughter Majorie; Blackwell via Hilda Smith; and son Harry Smith.

Their other sons; Arthur Smith remained in Kent (and later retired to Western Australia) and Herbert Smith sadly gave his life in WWI.  Further, after WWII some of their grandchildren also moved into the hotel business in Great Yarmouth with each operating additional properties.

My father was Fred Scott and for many years ran the Central Hotel in St.Georges road. In the 1960's he arranged to lose some upper bedrooms and replace it with a flat continental style sun roof for the benefit of guests.
The hotel was for years the place the clan met for a New Years bash which usually saw a conga going from the hotel and in and out of neighbouring houses in Kent Square.
