Palmers Department Store, 1902

Photograph of Palmers, decorated for the corronation of King Edward VII

By John Layton

Palmers was the the first public building to be illuminated by electricity inĀ Great Yarmouth in 1902. The decorations are to celebrate the corronation of King Edward VII and were designed and erected under the supervision of AJ Chaston. He was also responsible for Palmers' christmas displays between 1903 and 1909.

The shop front, as can be seen here, consisted of several display cases, with the main store entrance being set back from the pavement, with room to walk around the display cases between.

This lasted until at least the 1970's, when the display cases were demolished to make way for the present shop front, incorporating the showcase area into the main shop area.
