E Moore & Son. General builders, Litchfield Rd, Southtown

By Brian Sones

This article is submitted on behalf of my younger brother, Alan Sones, who served an apprenticeship as a bricklayer with Moore’s from October 1955.

Alan remained with the firm until he migrated to Adelaide in South Australia, in January 1964, where he continued to work mostly in a self employed capacity as a bricklayer and stone mason.

A recent search using Google Earth, shows that the company’s yard, located at the south end of Litchfield Road has probably been incorporated into extensions to Great Yarmouth Collage.

Alan recalls working with bricklayers George Popay, Johnny Bowles, Don Harboard, and Valentine Grimble, and  David Pacey, a carpenter; the General foreman was Alfred Moss.

Other apprentice bricklayers at the time were Gordon West and John Cannell.

Alan recalls some significant projects undertaken by Moore’s as including new  premises for the Missions to Seamen on South Quay and the church of St Mary Magdalene at Gorleston.

Work was also undertaken at the Victoria Hotel on Marine Parade South, later re-named the Carlton, extensions to the Northgate Hospital and also jobs in Beccles, Bungay and Rackheath Hall.

It would be interesting to hear from any of Alan’s former workmates.

Moore’s may have relocated their yard and continued in business as general builders.

Quite possibly the business may have ceased to trade, it would be of interest as to when this may have occurred.

I worked at E Moore & sons from 1985 to 1991. Johnny Bowles and Val Grimble were still working thee then. The company celebrated its centenary in 1991 and shortly after I was made redundant. The Company went into receivership in 1992 and the College bought the site and extended. The remaining builds are the original office block on the end of Lichfield Road, the flat roofed 2 storey building which was the office when I worked there. The Joinery Shop and the Atcost building. These are earmarked for demolishion shortly.

Hi, I have lived right near Moores since 1982. I lived next door to Reg Cracknell who worked there, our houses were built by Moores. Kaye you said the buildings were earmarked for demolition shortly? You wrote that in 2013, well for the last week they have been knocking down all the buildings beside the gate, also does anyone remember Steven Turner a bricklayer from there?
